Health Canada Internship
Type: Internship (paid)
Description: The internship Program at Health Canada
provides some students in the Program with the opportunity to
learn about, and gain experience in, health law and policy from
within government. Students spend three or six months working
full-time in the Policy Planning and Priorities Directorate of
the Health Policy and Communications Branch of Health Canada.
Students perform a variety of duties including (but not limited
to): preparation of issues and options papers; preparation of
memoranda; provision of research assistance to Health Canada
staff; preparation of background reports; participation in
meetings; and participation in stakeholder consultations.
Students have a supervisor at Health Canada and a mentor at
their home university. The supervisor assigns work, reviews work
with the students, and meets with the students regularly to give
feedback, answer questions, and provide direction. The mentor is
available for consultation on request and communicates with the
student regularly to oversee activities, answer questions, and
provide advice.
Students can take up an internship during an LLM, soon after
completion of the LLM, and during a doctorate. They can do
either a three-month or a six-month internship. Health Canada
provides a stipend for a full-time placement. Interns are
responsible for all costs associated with the internship (e.g.,
moving, travel, accommodation).
The Program Co-ordinating Committee makes the selection
decisions. Students are selected on the basis of past academic
performance and evidence of strong research and writing skills.

apply for a summer internship, please contact the program office

HeLEX – Centre for Health, Law and Emerging Technologies,

Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
Research Promotion & Development team
Type: Internship (unpaid)
Description: The Pan American Health Organization
recognizes the importance of a new generation of public health
leaders who have an understanding of global health issues and
the role of international organizations in achieving the MDGs
and other health issues. In this regard, the PAHO Internship
Program trains young and energetic individuals entering the
public health field and interested in providing services to the
Organization on a voluntary basis also known as internships/practicums.
PAHO interns are ‘trainees’ matched with appropriate technical
units based upon the individual’s interests and skills.
Placements are in the Washington, DC headquarters or one of the
PAHO country offices or scientific centers in the Region.

Requirements

Minimum of 20 year old

Enrolled in a program as a
senior undergraduate, graduate or post graduate, with a
concentration in a field relevant to PAHO’s work in
particular: Public Health, Management, Business,
International Affairs, Latin American studies, or related
health or social science areas

Strong writing, research,
and organizational skills to support technical cooperation
efforts

Ability to work
independently and demonstrate initiative and flexibility

Fluent in English with
working knowledge of one of the other languages of the
Region (Spanish, Portuguese, French)

Health insurance coverage

Not have any relatives of
active staff working (consultants included) at PAHO (HQ,
country offices, or Centers). Under the Staff regulations
relatives are defined as:
Duration
During summer, the sessions
are typically10-12 weeks long, and full time and during the fall
and spring sessions the sessions are either full or part-time
with a minimum of 20 hrs per week. Students may be eligible to
receive academic credit for their work, depending upon the
university requirements. Interns normally maintain the same
working hours as regular staff.
